Hi everyone – time for an official update. But first, thanks so much for the support and many notes since the release of Kings of Heaven. The end of the series was for me a six year journey in the concluding, and I’m glad the story has stuck with many of you in the same way.
Writing Update
As one story ends, another begins. You may have noticed there’s a lot of unknowns in the Ash and Sand universe. Well, in my mind, there was always more story to tell, and I am now nearly finished another book in the same world, tentatively titles Dark Sea’s End. It does not require that you’ve read Ash and Sand, but it will certainly bring additional enjoyment if you have. The book will be released in ebook/paperback around May/June of this year! I’ll let you know when there’s a firmer release, and give a few more details before that.
Dark Sea’s End brings back a couple favorite characters, and introduces a few new ones. It takes place nearly at the immediate end of Kings of Heaven, and is directly related to Ruka’s final plans at the monastery…I’ll leave it there.
If you want to learn more…
I’ve started a new place for you to support or interact with me, at a place called Locals. It’s a bit like Patreon, if you’ve heard of that, and I have a variety of plans for it. Going forward, I’ll be posting videos there reviewing my favorite books, chatting with other authors (and bloggers), or just recommending books/tv/music/nonsense. Sometimes, I’ll probably just rant. I’ll also be posting early samples of my work, stopping by to chat, and just interacting more frequently with anyone so inclined. The first TWO chapters of Dark Sea’s End are available there, right now, for subscribers…

As ever, thanks for your support, and of course I’ll always answer emails at rich.nell2@gmail.com. But I look forward to interacting with some of you at Locals!
Until next time…

Hi Richard,
I started reading Kings of Paradise, which I heard from Kit you tube video review, and I am really enjoying the novel.
Are there any possibilities that your self-published work will be picked up by a publisher?
Congrats on doing such fine work!
Richard Nell says
Hi Jordan – very pleased to hear it. I suppose anything is possible. I’ve yet to try and actually do it, though one day that may change. Thanks very much for the kinds words, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

Hey Richard,
very glad to hear that – I was left absolutely astonished by the quality of your Ash and Sand saga, which, imo, can absolutely stand with the greats of the genre. I’ve been spreading word of your talent whenever possible ever since I’ve finished reading it. Really looking forward to your next work.
Richard Nell says
Well that’s most kind – the next work continues. And if you can’t wait, there’s a few chapters on locals!

Curious why not make a patreon, rather than “unknown but like patreon”? It’s there a particular reason? Is it better some way?
I’m a big fan(whos very much looking forward to your new project) and would be happy to throw some money your way, but even so making an account and giving my credit card to yet another website is definitely an obstacle for me.
Just my 2 cents.

Sorry for the delay – I get so much spam I hardly check website comments, and email is definitely the best place to reach me. However your question is probably more intelligent than the answer. Partially, I saw it as an experiment. I still might use Patreon in the future, just for the reasons you outline – many people there already – but I also dislike some of their business practices. Anyway, another thing to do! Appreciate any and all support in any form, and thanks for the question.

Quick question, are planning on doing any more audio books for the Ash and Sand series or other books? Thank you!
Richard Nell says
Hey Matt, sorry for the delay. Yes indeed I am – Kings of Ash is actually finished and will be available this year. Kings of Heaven is in the works and our intention (I’m working with the same narrator from book 1, Ralph Lister), is to have it out very shortly after. I’d very much like to get my other books the audio treatment soon after that, though likely with different narrators.
