I did an interview for JustKindleBooks the other day, and they asked me a question about writing habits and music I thought was fantastic: ‘Do any of your characters have theme songs?’
I sort of laughed and said yes and listed a couple. But the truth is my fascination with music while I write is repetitive and almost insane. It’s…addictive. Compulsive. I will loop the same song over and over and over to the point that if someone heard they might call the cops, or at least the men in white coats. I’ll even listen to it when I stop writing—while I’m working out, or doing the dishes.
Why? I don’t really know. Let’s just say it helps. I’m looking for the right ‘mood’ for the character and music sometimes bring it out. Or maybe I just like it, and I’m a little crazy, so bugger off.
What exactly am I listening to in these bizarre, manic moments of obsession? Well, it depends on the character, and the scene. Some characters have a few songs. But Kindlebooks was right – my characters totally have theme songs, and if you want a snapshot into a mildly insane mind, and the musical inspiration behind (some of) the characters in Kings of Paradise, well, I’ll list them below. I’d be curious if anyone else finds these ‘appropriate’, or if there’s other songs they’d imagine in their own little mental soundtracks…

If I had a heart – Fever Ray
Wish It Was True – The White Buffalo
Birmun

Well now I have the Vikings theme stuck in my head while re-reading the first book I just finished yesterday. Love these songs, keep up the work man and looking forward to book 2!
If you ever need a beta reader I’m 100% in.

Thanks Mark. Ha, yes, my choices *might* have revealed some of my tv habits… Anyway screw you, Vikings, it suits Ruka better!
You’re officially on the list.
